11.20 Philip Curtis

“The Mapping of Antarctica”

An examination of maps illustrating the discovery of the Terra Australis Nondum Cognito, the “Unknown Southern Land”. Ranging from the beautiful and wildly speculative charts of the Age of Discovery through to the superb and evocative maps of the Heroic Age, we will be looking at the extraordinary stories and people that lay behind their creation.
12.10 Buddy Levy

Empire of Ice & Stone: The Disastrous and Heroic Voyage of the Karluk

Stefansson’s Arctic expedition aboard the Karluk provides an interesting contrast to Shackleton’s Endurance. Of particular interest to those attending the Shackleton Autumn School, two members on the Karluk were oceanographer James Murray and physician/biologist Alistair Forbes Mackay, both of whom had been with Shackleton aboard the Nimrod on the British Antarctic Expedition (1907-09).  At opposite ends of the globe, and within a year or two of each other, both the Endurance and Karluk expeditions floundered at the whims of the elements. Ships were crushed and lost, and crews were cast adrift on the ice.
But the outcomes of each expedition were very different.
13:00 Lunch There is a selection of cafes and restaurants and pubs (yes, many do food as well) within walking distance.
14:30 Sabina Waldron

Sailor, Explorer, Writer: Frank Worsley in the Heroic Age and beyond.

Sabina has found in Frank Worsley the perfect subject for her passion with history and her profession as a sailor. The Shackleton Autumn School is delighted to hear the story of “Shackleton’s Captain” from one who appreciates ‘Wuzzles’ role better than most.
15:20 Tea/Coffee  In house tea/coffee stations. No charge, donation only.
15:40 Allegra Rosenberg

Note : due to circumstances beyond their control, Peter & Leni Gillman are unable to attend this year’s Shackleton Autumn School. We are pleased to announce that in their place, Allegra Rosenberg will speak on ………..

Polar fans, now and then

As long as there have been explorers, people have been obsessed with them. From Clements Markham to Dorothy Irving-Bell and beyond, this talk will explore the history of polar obsession, with the help of modern-day scholarship on fan culture.
16:30 IceBreakers

A selection of interesting topics  in a ‘5 slides in 5 minutes’ format presented by energetic, enthusiastic speakers. The most informative, imaginative and entertaining contribution is awarded the Bob Burton memorial trophy. Curated by the Shackleton Autumn School’s Mark McClean.

If you have a topic that might be of interest to those attending the Shackleton Autumn School, email the 2024 Shackleton Autumn School. But hurry, IceBreakers fills up quickly!

Now, and with unfettered access to Sir George Hubert Wilkins’ archive through her role as Polar Curator in The Ohio STate University, we can hear the story of the first submarine to venture under the Arctic icecap, and Wilkins, the man who led it (Note: Sir George Hubert Wilkins accompanied Shackleton aboard Quest as botanist and photographer).
10.50 Tea/Coffee Time to catchup with others over a tea or coffee. No charge, donations gratefully received.
11:20 Peter Straughan

Shackleton, a hero of our time

Having penned the screenplay for the forthcoming StudioCanal film on Ernest Shackleton (starring Tom Hardy), Peter will look at the challenge of avoiding “Hollywood-ing” the story of the Endurance and  of remaining true to the facts in exploring what he found most heroic in the character that was Ernest Shackleton.
12:10 Joe O’Farrell

The Fragility of Polar Reputations – a case study including Scott, Shackleton, Rae and Mackintosh.

Shackleton Autumn School committee member Joe O’Farrell returns to the podium, this time to address the complex question of perception and repute as applied to a sample of the leading names of Arctic and Antarctic exploration.
